The Bremerhaven Zoo is a center of attraction both forchildren and adults. Its history began in 1912 when a local zoologist andschool teacher, Dr. Heinrich Lübben, proposed the creation of the cityaquarium. It opened a year later with a demonstration of the extraction of oneof sea trawlers. Now most different inhabitants of the underwater world, inparticular pike, eel, sea trout, sea horses live in the nine huge aquariums.
In 1928 Lubbenmanaged to open also a zoo including mainly northern animals. Polar bears,seals and sea lions, penguins, pumas, foxes and arctic hares live in it. Thereis a monkey here, which sailors often brought from distant journeys. In total, thereare more than 280 animals in the zoo.
