This structure conflicts with its name: the Tower is actually stony. It was called wooden because there was a warehouse timber near it. The medieval Gothic tower with lancet windows was part of the city fortifications, it had gates. On the facade you can see marks indicating the flooding in Mainz in 1565 and 1784. For some time the tower was used as a watchtower and a prison for thieves, murderers and rioters. Its most famous prisoner was a robber Yang Byukler, who haunted Mainz and even neighboring France. The tower can be viewed from the outside only.
