The history of Wolfsburg castle, which gave its name to the city, began in the XIV century. First, there was a modest residential building surrounded by water. It was erected by the von Bartensleben family. A wolf was depicted on the family's coat of arms - hence the name of the place.
Gradually, the housing grew to the size of a real castle, which was rebuilt in XVII century into a Renaissance palace with a garden and park and rather reflected the family’s high status. Only two wings of the building were used for residential purposes, the rest of the space was occupied by the office, the Chamber Room, the Garden Hall and other halls. Today, the castle houses the local history museum, a gallery, a Photographic Institute, ceramic workshop and restaurants. :"Times New Roman","serif"; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";mso-ansi-language:EN;mso-fareast-language: EN-US;mso-bidi-language:AR-SA'> Wolfsburg castle, which gave its name to the city, began in the XIV century.
