Nature reserve “Anholt Switzerland” grew out of the idea of duke Leopold of Salm-Salm who lived in the 19th century. He decided to lay out a park that would resemble a part of Swiss nature in the district of Lucerne lake as much as possible. To enhance the colour, an alpine house called Swiss was built on a rocky island in the middle of the local nameless lake.
Today the park is an atlas of European fauna come to life: the majority of types of animals and birds living in this part of the world live here. This includes wolves, bison, several types of bears, lynxes, roes, owls, peacocks, and other animals and birds living in huge premises separated from men. Visitors can participate in feeding and caretaking: there are special half-day programmes for that. You will receive a certificate for completion. From March 15 to October 25 visitors with “Wohnmobiles” (residential vans) can park and spend the night in the reserve.
