The Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park is located less than 20km from Stralsund. Almost half of it consists of the waters of the Baltic Sea and covers part of the islands of Rügen and Hiddensee, Darss (part of the peninsula of Fischland-Darß-Zingst) and Zingst. The land part of it includes marshes, salt meadows, oak and pine forests, inhabited by deer, wild boar, and fallow deer.
Cranes flying south stop at the park in the fall and 163 species of birds constantly live there. There are seals and porpoises in the sea there. The park’s best viewing platforms are on the hills - at Pramort (Zingst) and Hohe Dune (near Rostock).
