Vischering Castle is a classical moated castle with serious fortifications, powerful towers, folding bridge and a cappella (chapel). This is one of the oldest and best preserved round castles. Vischering Castle was built in the XIII century by the von Ludinghausen family, who owned it for 500 years. Until the XVI century, they did not take up decorations, and the construction had a quite menacing appearance. In 1521 there was a fire that severely damaged the building both inside and outside. After the repair and restoration work Vischering Castle became more like a palace.
Today the castle is widely known outside Germany. The Münsterlandmuseum museum for children is in it, which is devoted to knights, with a demonstration of films, armor, weapons and other medieval artifacts. The iron collar of the legendary knight Lambert von Oer is also here. Both children and adults like the museum very much. It takes at least two hours to tour around castle and explore the whole of it thoroughly! The towers offer wonderful views, and the area around the castle is perfect for picnic or cycling. Among other things, the castle features a restaurant.
