Mountain Turmberg is located on the outskirts of Karlsruhe. Its summit offers excellent views of not only the city but also of the valleys of the Rhine and the Palatinate Forest. In clear weather even French Alsace is visible from the peak of Turmberg. People appreciated the exceptional location of the mountain still in the Middle Ages. Counts of Hohenberg built the Durlach Castle here. Only its watchtower has been preserved up to now.
Shenek (Schoneck) sports centre is also on the mountain. The football team of Germany, which sensationally won the tournament, prepared for the 1954 World Cup in that centre. This victory was the strongest motivating factor for post-war Germany. The funicular built in 1888 takes people to the top of the mountain. It is the oldest funicular railway in Germany!
