Trier’s St. Peter’s Cathedral is deemed to be the oldest Christian church in whole Germany! Its construction started in 320 AD, during the reign of Emperor Constantine, by the order of Archbishop Maximin of Trier. The Cathedral was finalized by 1200.
The Trierer Dom is a Romanesque cathedral, however it also reflects other styles of architecture: Gothic, Baroque and neo-classical. In 1986, UNESCO declared the temple a monument of universal importance. Holy Christian relics are kept in the Cathedral, among which are the Holy Robe of Jesus (also known as the Chiton of the Lord), the skull of St. Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, who ardently supported the construction of the Cathedral, as well as the Holy Nail, the sandal of St. Andrew, the remaining chain, which St. Peter the Apostle was enchained by, and so on.
