From the medieval walls of Brandenburg two towers havesurvived in an excellent condition in each of the Old and New Towns. The onesin the Old Town are the Plauer Tower (Plauer Torturm) and the Rathenow Tower(Rathenower Torturm). The Plauer Tower, erected in the XIV century, defendedthe gate leading to the town. An earth mound stretches from it to the 28-meterRathenow Tower, which was built in 1500 and is considered the oldest defensivetower in the town. In this construction a drawbridge, gates and a dungeon werebuilt in the shape of an irregular rectangle.
The ancientfortifications also survived in the New Town. Here you can see the Stone Tower(Steintorturm) and the Mill Tower (Mühlentorturm). The Stone Tower was built inthe XVI century and it is the only one open to visitors. It houses anexhibition dedicated to navigation on the Havel River, and there is anobservation deck on the top of the tower. The late-Gothic Mill Tower (1411) gotits name because of its proximity to the mill dam. Until the XIX century it wasthe main control point in the town on the road to Spandau and served as the townentrance.
