Although Remscheid was granted the city status back in1808, the city administration did not immediately acquire its own premises. After several moves, it was decided to purchase the building of the huntingclub in the Theodor Heuss Square (Theodor-Heuss-Platz). However, after thepurchase, it was decided to demolish the club, at the site of which the firststone in the foundation of the town hall was laid on the birthday of EmperorFrederick III in 1902.
Thepowerful building of gray limestone andbasalt was built in 1906. It has three wings and a 58-meter high clock tower. The original interior was richly decorated with frescoes, paintings and stainedglass windows, however, it was much simplified during the post-war restoration.Today, it is primarily the working place of the mayor, the city council andseveral municipal agencies. There is a huge stone lion in front of the townhall on the square - a heraldic animal of the Dukes of Berg. The statue wascreated in 1939.
