A building complex of the New Custom house is interesting for its architecture in Deconstructivist style. In 1990 Duesseldorf government announced a competition for a complex for Art and Media Centre of the Rhein Harbour. In 1994 they decided to build here a new custom house, in place of the old one. The works on this project were supervised by the American architect Frank Gary.
Three buildings of peculiar, irregular form eventually appeared. They contained only few lines crossing at the right angle, the rest of the building being exaggeratedly uneven and asymmetric. The project and its realisation caused a great deal of disputes among citizens, but with time people have reconciled with such a strange custom house.
