The Romans living on the site of modern Mainz were good shipbuilders. This is proved by the museum exhibit. Here you can see the real Roman ships which sailed down the Rhine in the first centuries AD and which were found during the construction of the Hilton Hotel of Mainz. The Museum of Ancient Shipping presents two full-size models, reduced copies, warship wreckages, as well as sculptures, maps, multimedia installations and other materials dedicated to the shipbuilding and navigation in the antiquity era. In addition, the museum offers an opportunity to see how the ships are restored today: it has a model workshop.
