The Church of Holy Ghost in Clausthal is an attraction on a Europeanscale. It is Europe’s oldest surviving wooden church. It was built in 1642, inthe midst of the Thirty Years' War. Its creators could hardly assume then thatthe wooden structure would survive a century. Oak and spruce became thematerial for the church in the Baroque style; the roof of the building is linedwith lead. The length of the wooden church is 57m, the width is 26m. Itscapacity is about a thousand people.
Each year, the church isvisited by up to thirty thousand tourists. It is still surprising that thischurch was spared by nearly four stormy centuries of its existence. In 2000 itsrestoration began, which lasted 13 years. Now, the Lutheran Church re-opened tovisitors.
