The ivy-encircled Styrum Castle (end of the XIII century) is the family nest of Limburg-Styrum counts. Today's appearance of the building is very different from the original: after the fire in the XVIII century the castle was rebuilt in the Baroque style and a park was created around it. It was reconstructed in the late XIX century, when it was bought by industrialist August Thyssen from the Thyssen dynasty who founded ThyssenKrupp industrial group one hundred years later. The group today manufactures and distributes elevators in different countries of the world.
Today, the castle houses a restaurant and a conference room. Aquarius water museum is in the water tower built next to it. The museum is part of the Route of Industrial Heritage in the region. The route also has mines, factories and technical museums of the Ruhr area.
