Stadthagen Castle was built in 1535-1539 on theinitiative of Count Adolf XI. For its construction the count hired Architect ofTubingen Jörg Unkair, who had previously participated in the construction ofthe Cistercian Bebenhausen Monastery (Kloster Bebenhausen). In the old days,the castle attracted with the ornaments on its pediments and porticos. Plaster reliefswere here, but eventually all the details were lost. Unfortunately, today it isimpossible to look around Stadthagen Castle in detail: it is the administrationbuilding of the tax inspection.
Despiteits artistic value, Stadthagen Castle became a museum. However, the charmingcastle garden is open to visitors. In summer, the medieval FisKuß Fest is heldat the castle park under the patronage of the tax office. Historic reenactment concertsof ancient music are organized at the festival. Usually there are tastingpavilions in the back of the park at a small Chinese gazebo, where you cantaste the fragrant smoked sausages called Pinkel, filled with wild greencabbage (Grunkohl) or the salty bacon called Kasseler. All this is washed down withbeer or a cup of wild plum.
