St. Severin’s Church on a hill near the village of Keitum founded in1240. It is the oldest church building in the region of Schleswig-Holstein. Thenave, altar and apse were built of granite, travertine and Rhenish brick. Theoldest preserved object is the stone font on a lion’s paw. The tower was addedin the middle of the XV century and has long served as a lighthouse island, aswell as a prison. In the XV century there was a carved altar in the church withthe image of the Resurrection. In the XVI century, the church became Lutheranand was dedicated to the Archbishop of Cologne, Severin, who lived at the endof the IV century.
The temple isknown far beyond Sylt thanks to its organ music concerts held on Wednesdays. In1999, the church got a new organ, which locals jokingly called"whistle". In 2005, the laureate of international contests AlexanderIvanov became the organ player and chanter of the church. He was born in St.Petersburg, graduated from the Gnessin School and the Faculty of Sacred Musicin Herford.
