It is believed that the Roman Catholic Cathedral ofSt. Peter in Osnabrück is on the very spot where Charlemagne founded the firststone church. The modern building of the cathedral was built in the XIIIcentury in the Romanesque style. The original cross of the XIII century was preservedhere. Altars and statues were added to the interior in the Baroque period.
In front of thewestern facade there is a small stone lion figure, which locals call Löwenpudel.According to legend, Charlemagne was angry with citizens when he learnt abouttheir contacts with the enemy. He vowed to execute the first person he wouldmeet. When Charles the Great entered the city, the first person, who rushed tohim with a plea for forgiveness, was his sister – the wife of the local Duke.Suddenly, a poodle appeared ahead the woman and leaped at the king. He killedthe dog thus keeping his oath inviolate and avoiding killing his sister. Thetownspeople erected this monument in memory of the dog that saved its owner.
