The Regensburg Cathedral is the most famous Gothic church in Bavaria. Its construction dragged on for almost 400 years. The Cathedral was founded in 1275 and completed in 1634. Construction of the towers was finished even later - in the second half of the XIX century. The temple was erected at the site of earlier buildings. There was a church there at the beginning of the IX century, where the Emperor Charlemagne happened to be. Then the church burned down, and another cathedral was built in its place, which was also destroyed by fire. The fire, which seriously damaged the merchant city, occurred in 1273, and two years later the city people started a new construction.
It was decided to name the temple after St. Peter the Apostle. The construction, which lasted for centuries, has affected the cathedral appearance. It succeeded to maintain the general architectural direction - Gothic style, but there was an overlap with the colors. Different building materials were used for the temple construction at various times. That’s why the shades of the Cathedral’s exterior walls vary from light grey to green-grey.
The temple is famous not only for the architecture, but also for the boys' choir, called Domspatzen («Cathedral sparrows"). You can listen to the boys on Sundays and religious holidays.
