St. Michael’s Church was built in Hildesheim in the XI century on thesite of the small Chapel of the Holy Cross. This church suffered repeatedlyfrom fires, but it was renovated every time.
In the XIII century the church’s main nave was covered with a painted ceilingconsisting of 1,300 wooden parts. During the war it was possible to parse andhide this unique example of religious art along with other valuable artifacts.In 1947, St. Michael's Church underwent a large-scale restoration according toold plans and drawings. The medieval level of the stone floor and the famouswooden ceiling were restored there.
