The history of St. Dionysus church begins at thesame time the city was founded, that is in the 8th century. Thepresent building of the church with the elements of Roman and Gothic styles isthe third in turn. It dates back to the 13th century and wasconstructed at the peak of Esslingen’s prosperity. Townsfolk wanted tohighlight the well-being of their city and build a church with a spire thatwould be seen already when you approached the city. The church is famous forits preserved old font, stained-glass windows of 1300 that are considered amongthe most beautiful and old ones in Germany, and an unusual architecturalelement. Two if its towers are connected with a bridge in the upper part: thisway the architect in the 17th century decided to “bring back” thesouthern tower that started heeling. There is a museum in the lower part of themuseum that exhibits excavations with fragments of the very first church inthis place.
