Shlossburg towering above the Wupper River is considered the largest restored castle in North Rhine - Westphalia. Being built in the XII century, Shlossburg was the residence of the Counts of Bergisch County and a hunting castle since the XV century. By the middle of the XIX century, the castle, coming apart over time due to the Swedes’ raids and the imperial troops’ attacks, was sold. The new owners restored it according to the drawings of the XVI century for several decades.
The current appearance of the castle corresponds to its look in 1715. Now it is a museum of the Bergische Land and is still being excavated. The Knights Hall, Gallery of Ancestors and the Kamenate (Ladies heated apartment) are open for view with scenes from the life of the castle, portraits of the owners and the findings from the excavations. The Siege and Bell Towers, the exhibition of torture equipment and guns are in the castle’s courtyard.
