According to legend, the stone Satzvey Castle was erected in the XII century by the knights who returned from the Crusades. It differs from traditional strongholds of the time with that it was not built on a high hill but on the island. The powerful stone walls and towers were surrounded by the waters of two rivers and a deep ditch. The castle owners were constantly changing over many centuries. But since the XVII century to the present day, the castle has belonged to the old aristocratic family of Count von Gymnich.
Presently, guided tours are organized to the ancient residential Satzvey Castle, the oldest buildings of which date back to the XIV century. There is a picturesque restaurant here; some rooms are rented and spectacular festivals, concerts, theatrical performances, and Christmas, Halloween and Easter celebrations are held next to it throughout the year. Satzvey Castle became the first castle in Germany where Ritterfestspiele Knights’ tournament was held three decades ago. Today this traditional event attracts hundreds of tourists from around the world.
