The industrial salt development in the outskirts of Berchtesgaden has started since the XVI century, when the first mines appeared here. One of them goes directly into the side of Mount Watzmann. This mountain is remarkable in itself. This is the third highest peak in Germany-2713m above sea level. According to legend, a king named Watzmann once ruled here. He was very cruel and gods decided to punish him. They turned Watzmann into a mountain, which now dominates the surrounding landscape.
Everything is based on the principles of interactivity in trips to the salt mine on Mount Watzmann. All trippers here will feel themselves like a medieval salt miner. At the mine entrance everyone gets a robe, in which the former miners used to work. Putting it on, the visitors go down into the mine, pass through the unique salt caves, sail boat on the underground lake, moving from floor to floor by a wooden chute, sliding down on it like from a hill. At the same time, tourists are told about the salt production traditions and are given the opportunity to try mining a bit of salt to spice up their rightful dinner.
Coming finally to the light of day, you can also experience other qualities of the salt. On the opposite slope of the Mount Watzmann a resort complex was opened. Treatment involves bathing in the water of healing salt caves Watzmann Terme. Both adults and children bathe in them with pleasure.
