The Rottach (Rottachsee) is a small lake, 15 kilometers south of Kempten. It was created artificially in the 1980s of the twentieth century in order to prevent flooding of the surrounding towns and villages by the rivers Danube and Iller. The "extra" water was diverted into the lake. Now, it is quiet and calm here with tranquil landscapes in all seasons. The pre-Alpine hills are seen in the distance and villages and recreational areas –in the surrounding area. One of the recreational areas is in Petersthal village, where one can enjoy a day relaxing in nature and riding horses. There are bikeways and barbecue areas around the lake.
