The sleek and elegant Pfalzgrafenschloss Castle, located in the old town, is one of the claims of fame of Neumarkt. In 1410, Count Johann von Pfalz-Neumarkt inherited the Upper Palatinate. He moved their government to Neumarkt and began to develop the city. The castle was also built during his reign. According to the original plan, the castle was to have two towers, but only the west tower was built. The nephew of Johann Otto II, who was called Otto Mathematician for his love of science, added a new 30-meter tower to the eastern wing. There was a small observatory in it, which, unfortunately, has not survived.
In the XVI century Pfalzgrafenschloss Castle, like the rest of Neumarkt, gradually began to fall into decay. From 1560 the castle served as the residence of the mayor of Neumarkt. In 1795 a tobacco factory was built in it and at the beginning of the XIX century the district court was arranged nearby. The West wing was used as a prison until 1930. Now it again houses the court. Tourists are not allowed to get inside. Tours of the castle take place only on special occasions, such as during the Old Town Festival (Altstadtfest), by registering in advance. But the castle’s courtyard is open for visiting at any time, where you can see statues of lions (that don’t resemble lions at all) and a fountain depicting Neptune.
