In the private Museum of Meteorites in Oberwesel youcan see impactites, tektites and meteorites from the asteroid belt betweenJupiter and Mars. The exhibition includes not only the meteorites, but alsodetails about their origins and types are presented. On the walls there arepaintings by painters inspired by the visit of the envoys of the cosmos.
Aunique fragment of iron meteorite weighing 43 kg is the collection’s main"star". The meteorite is known as Campo del Cielo. This is one of thelargest meteorite ever fallen to Earth. It is believed that it weighedapproximately 44 tons. The meteorite was discovered in 1576 in Argentina and isestimated to be 4.6 thousand years old. The museum was founded by Gabriel andStefan Decker, who have been studying meteorites more than 15 years and aremembers of the American Meteor Society.
