In the 1960s, North Gate - Nordertor - was known evento those Germans, who had not been in Flensburg. After all Nordertor’ssilhouette was decorated with a 30-Pfenning stamp, which was sold in over 3million copies. The gate is the symbol of Flensburg. It was built 200 yearslater than the fortress itself, at the end of the XVI century.
Two plates areremarkable on the gate with an unusual, stair-step top: one depicts the coat ofarms of the Danish King Christian IV, who ruled here in the XVI century. Theother has the royal motto Regna Firmat Pietas (Piety strengthens the Kingdom)on it. Recently Nordertor gate has been carrying out a romantic function: marriageshave been registered in the room over its arch.
