The Art Museum of the dynasty von der Heydt is housed in the old Elberfeld Town Hall -a town, which was independent before Wuppertal was created. The art collection bequeathed to the city by the local family of financiers and bankers von der Heydt was the basis of the museum. The museum that bears their name was founded in 1961. The collection includes about three thousand paintings, 400 sculptures and more than 30,000 graphic works. The collection spans the period from the XVI century to the middle of the XX century. It includes works by Toulouse-Lautrec, Degas, Monet, Munch, Gauguin, Picasso, Cezanne, Renoir, Bonnard and Kandinsky.
