Museum Folkwang includes a rich collection of works of art. Here you can see works by Rodin, Chagall, and Picasso. Initially, the museum was established in the city of Hagen. Philanthropist and collector Karl Osthaus founded it in the early twentieth century there. But in 1921, the collection was transported to Essen.
There are paintings, sculptures, photographs, and other works of art relating to the XIX-XX centuries here. Among the exhibits are works by Picasso, Monet, Chagall, Rodin, Cezanne, Renoir, Van Gogh.
During World War II, the museum building was destroyed, but the items in the museum collection were not affected because they were pre-removed from the premises. The exhibits are now on display in a new, modern building.
