Moers Castle is the oldest building of the city. Ithad been the residence of Count Moers for a long time. The castle tower wasbuilt of tufa in the XII century. In 1810 the castle was bought by a textilemagnate Friedrich Wintgens. He expanded the east wing and placed a factorythere, as well as removed buildings from the courtyard and planted trees in it.
In 1905, theMoers Castle passed to the city, which opened a museum there (Grafschaftermuseum),dedicated to the history of the castle and the county. In 1975 the basementunits were occupied by a Castle Theatre (SchlosstheaterMoers) - the smallestmunicipal theater in Germany, which enjoys the recognition of the public andcritics. Today, you can stroll through the medieval defensive walls of theMoers Castle, look out of the loopholes and peep into the secret tunnel. Insidethe building you can find a rococo hall with a fretted ceiling, a four-posterbed and armoires of a carved oak of the late XVIII century in the bedroom. Themuseum contains furniture, ceramics, costumes, household items, as well asarchaeological finds from the Roman period. One of the rooms has a collectionof antique dolls and toys.
