The Mining Museum of the Upper Harz Region, located in the town ofClausthal-Zellerfeld, is one of the largest such museums in Europe. Moreover,it is one of Germany’ oldest technology museums. Its collection began to becollected still back in 1884. It opened to the public in 1892. Although wasdiscontinued in the Upper Harz Mining in 1930, Clausthal-Zellerfeld is stillproud of what its history is inextricably linked with.
The museum tells about thedevelopment of mining in Harz starting from ancient times to the present day. Herevisitors get acquainted with the mines’ equipment of different eras, minershousehold items, view layouts of the former School of Mining. A collection ofcoins minted from silver mined in the mines is widely represented in it. Hereyou can see with what minerals the mountains of Harz are rich. A separateexposition is devoted to the production of twisted cables, which were inventedin 1834, it is in Clausthal-Zellerfeld. Visitors can descend into the mine inthe miner's outfit and feel, what were the working conditions of miners in theold days.
