The Zollverein mine complex is considered one of the best examples of factory architecture in the world. In 2001, it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, which is a unique case. After all, the mine was closed still back in 1986!
Zollverein, once one of the largest mines of the Ruhr region, is now a mining museum. The coal was mined in this place in the 30-ies of the XIX century. By 1890 the Zollverein mines union of Essen became the most productive in Germany.
It remained such until the 60-ies of the XX century, when the coal industry crisis led to the closure of mines. The final decision to close Zollverein was taken in 1986. Now, the vast territory of the former enterprise houses interactive museum of mining, the Coal Road Ceramics Museum, the Ruhr Museum and permanent exhibition of modern art the Palace of Projects of Ilya Kabakov.
