Miltenberg City Museum is located in one of the city's oldest buildings. Like many other buildings of the old city center, this building was built in the timber-framing style. The house, which is often called the Old Rectorate (Alte Amtskellerei) in the town, was built in 1542 by architect Bernhard von Hardheim. In 1625 the building was purchased by a private owner, Miltenberg’s magistrate. Meetings of the local administration were held in it. The house survived all the cataclysms. Now it houses the Miltenberg City Museum.
The museum contains a large collection of artefacts relating to the town’s history. But the pride of the museum is a collection of documents attesting to the period when the Romans owned the territory we now call Bavaria. The collection in the Miltenberg City Museum was awarded the Bavarian Museum Grand Prix in 1999.
