Mildenburg Castle is located in the south-western outskirts of Miltenberg. It was first mentioned in 1226, although it is obvious that its construction started even earlier. The castle often passed from hand to hand. During the Thirty Years' War in 1618-1638, it was severely damaged, but was then recovered. In 1808 a local entrepreneur, Carl Gottlieb Horstig became its owner. In 1979, the city administration bought Miltenberg Castle. By that time, the castle and its surrounding are had become ultimately desolate. The city authorities had an idea to make the castle a museum. The idea was realized only in 2011.
You can now learn about the history of both Mildenburg Castle and the town here. The museum has a wonderful collection of paintings by old and contemporary painters. Tourists will also be interested to visit the observation deck on the castle’s tower. It offers a magnificent view of the city and surrounding area from a height of 27m. Here you can eat at the cafe, working at the castle.
