Market Square or the Marktplatz, as it is called in German, is the heart of Halle. A variety of celebrations are held here; the guests of the city come here to begin their acquaintance with it. The old Town Hall, neoclassical New Town Hall and the main temple of the city - a beautiful gothic Marktkirche Church, also known as the Marienkirche in honor of Virgin Mary are on Market Square in Halle. The church is decorated with four towers, about 90 meters high. The symbol of Halle -the Red Tower (Roter Turm) -is near the church. It is so beautiful that it does not leave poets and artists indifferent. It is, in particular, embodied in the painting by famous German painter, graphic artist and sculptor Ernst Ludwig Kirchner.
The monument to the most famous native of Halle, composer Handel (Händel-Denkmal), is also here. Nearby is a smart red house called Marktschlößchen (something like "A Little Castle on Market Square"). It now houses a cafe, an exhibition hall and a tourist information center. In the mornings the market noise can be heard on the square- especially spectacular before Christmas- like many centuries ago. On Marktplatz you can also see where the unique rift called Halle Rift passes. This tectonic formation is millions of years old. It is exactly on Marktplatz and divides the city. You should look on the rocks through a special glass called a geoscope. The rift’s trace extends over the entire area as a yellow line on the pavement. And it is not negligence of the city services or tricks of graffiti lovers, but a way of drawing attention to the natural attraction. Thanks to it the city traded in salt for centuries and became richer.
