The Gothic Cathedral of Saints Catherine and Maurice, or just the Magdeburg Cathedral is the majestic building of the city. It was erected on the site of a Romanesque basilica, from which no trace remains. The cathedral’s construction lasted until 1520. The temple withstood the Thirty Years' War, when the whole city was destroyed and the Second World, too. The statue of the Ten Virgins- five grieving and five rejoicing- from the list of Bible Stories stands out in its interior. The tomb of Holy Roman Emperor Otto I the Great is also here. He was the initiator of the construction of the cathedral and is considered the main patron of Magdeburg. A view on the city opens from the bell tower of the church that is more than a hundred meters high.
