Linnep Castle is one of the most picturesque in Ratingen. It is located in the valley of the Himmelsbach stream and is surrounded by a deep ditch and a pond. In the annals of the monastery the fortress was first mentioned in the XI century as the knight's castle of Linnep lords. The estate founders lived here until the middle of the XV century, and later changed owners many times.
Today, the ivy-covered castle is privately owned by the von Spee family and it can only be watched from the outside. While walking around the pond and the estate, you should pay attention to the main tower in the Romanesque style and the ramparts. These architectural structures are a little more than 800 years old. The castle’s main entrance, completed with a sweeping staircase, is also interesting. The evangelical Church of Linnep, erected in 1684 is not far from the castle. This is one of the oldest Reformed Churches in these parts. There is also a historic half-timbered house here, which housed the castle mill, a tavern and stables at different times.
