The oldest buildings in Rostock include Kröpelin Gate built in around 1270, which served as the main entrance to the city from the west. Together with the city walls, watchtowers and other gates they formed a single system of fortifications encircling the town in the Middle Ages. The first version of Kröpelin Gate was two stories high, but in the XV century the rich citizens of Rostock chipped in to build five more stories - to the current 54m height.
