Kröpelin Gate - Main Entrance to the City from the West
The oldest buildings in Rostock include Kröpelin Gate built in around 1270, which served as the main entrance to the city from the west. Together with the city walls, watchtowers and other gates they formed a single system of fortifications encircling the town in the Middle Ages. The first version of Kröpelin Gate was two stories high, but in the XV century the rich citizens of Rostock chipped in to build five more stories - to the current 54m height. There is a calendar in the central part of the clock showing not only the exact time but also the current date, month, the position of the sun, the moon phases, zodiac signs, the first letter of the name of the week day and the time of sunrise. The calendar is 2 meters in diameter. It rotates in a clockwise direction and making a full circle takes a whole year. Finally, at the bottom of the clock there is a disc that shows the Easter dates for 130 years. On the disc used now, the date is calculated until 2017. But its substitute is already ready: a few years ago Rostock’s students calculated the dates for 133 years in advance using computer.
You can know by the difference in the walls’ color where the original building ends and the later add-in begins. Since 1905, the walls overlooking the city have been decorated with a blue-white-red emblem, which are the colors of Mecklenburg. Currently, a permanent history exhibition covering the fortifications of Rostock, as well as temporary exhibitions and guided tours are organized here. One of the popular routes is dedicated to the criminal history of Rostock - from the Thirty Years' War to the end of the communist era.
