Knechtsteden Monastery is a city symbol of Dormagen attracting pilgrims from all over Europe. The monastery was founded by the Order of Norbertines at the beginning of the XII century. It is a Catholic religious order. In their activities, the monks were guided by the Charter of St. Augustine. The Romanesque basilica of Knechtsteden Monastery, built in 1130 and renovated in the 1990s, is the oldest temple of the city and one of the symbols of Dormagen. Knechtsteden was destroyed during the Battle of Worringen in the XIII century. But the Norbertine monks left it not because of this, but because of the secularization of church lands under Napoleon. At the end of the XIX century, the monastery passed into the ownership of the monks of the Order of the Holy Spirit Congregation, mainly engaged in missionary activity.
The frescoes of the XII century in the middle of the western apse attract the attention in the church. Particularly impressive is the picture of Christ Pantocrator with the apostles. The wooden Pietà of the XIV century is the main treasure of the monastery. This is the image of the Virgin Mary with Jesus on her lap after removal from the cross. The statue is considered to be miraculous and attracts thousands of pilgrims, as in the old days. Now 20 monks live in the monastery; the youngest of them is 71. In recent years, the monastery has played rather the role of a cultural center. Every summer it hosts a theater festival. Within its walls concerts of medieval music are held. Here, artists hold master classes and exhibitions.
