Famous German writer, composer, artist Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann, the author of “The Nutcracker”, “Sandman” and “Little Zaches” came to Bamberg in 1808. Hoffmann was offered the position of the bandmaster at the local theater which is now named after him (E.T.A. Hoffmann-Theater). Career of a bandmaster was not successful for Hoffmann, and he had to leave the theatre. However he stayed in town and earned his living by giving music lessons.
Having an unrequited love to one of his female students, he started writing an opera “Undina” and story “Don Juan”. Hoffmann lived in Bamberg for five years. The house on Schillerplatz where the writer occupied two upper floors has not practically changed since them. Today there is a museum there. The small bedroom replicates the environment in which the writer lived. The most famous room is the mirror study with mystery signs and portraits of Hoffmann on the walls. There is a monument of the writer and composer on Schillerplatz: he stands with his favourite cat on the shoulder.
