Historical Museum of the Palatinate in Speyer isvisited by about 200 thousand people a year. It was founded in the middle ofthe XIX century and is a huge exhibition complex today. The exhibits includemany ancient objects found during archaeological excavations in the region,including the famous Golden Hat of Schifferstadt. In total, there are sevenpermanent exhibitions here.
The exhibitiondedicated to the history of Speyer Cathedral is among the most interestingsections of the museum. Fragments of clothing and fabrics found in the tombs ofthe emperors are exhibited in the section "The King’s Last Robe". TheWine Museum tells about the rich history of this drink. The world’s oldest winebottle found in 1868 during the excavation of the tomb of a Roman nobleman andhis wife is the main treasure of this department. It is believed that wine wasmade in about 325 AD, i.e. it is more than a thousand years old!
The museum regularlyhosts large temporary exhibitions on various topics. Their subjects of interestwere the Vikings, the witch-hunt in medieval Germany, the German football, andthe tragedy of the Titanic. One of the most recent exhibitions, opened recently,is called “Detective, Agents and Spies”. The special pride of the exhibition organizersis the golden gun from the movie "The Man with the Golden Gun." Theexhibition is meant not only for adults but also for children. In German museumsthis usually means maximum interactivity. Young visitors enjoy trying on fakemustaches and wigs, learn fingerprinting and practice creating a suspect’s identikit.
