Hildesheim’s Market Squarewas created in the XIII century. During this period, the small Saxon townreceived the status of a major trading and merchant center. However, the oldhalf-timbered houses in the historic center were severely damaged by bombing in1945. And only a few decades later the city authorities started a thoroughrestoration of the historic appearance of the square. Photos and originaldrawings from different epochs were used during the restoration works.
Today, Hildesheim’s Market Square is one of the world’s most beautifultimber-framed squares! Here you can find the XVI-century Gothic building of theButchers’ Guild Hall (Knochenhauer-Amtshaus), renovated with 200-year-old tiles,as well as the XIX-century building of the Bakers’ Guild (Bäckeramtshaus) andthe Gothic Town Hall (Rathaus) - one of the oldest in Germany. One of the Town Halltowers, Tower Lily (Lilie), dates back to the XIII century. You can also seethe late-Gothic patrician house (Tempelhaus) with an impressive Renaissance baywindow, the City tavern (Stadtschänke) and Roland House (Rolandhaus) with an amazingstepped gable. The old market fountain restored according to the drawings of1542 complete the ensemble.
