Heger Tor arch is officially called the Waterloo Gate.It is a monument of the XIX century, reminiscent of the heroic participation ofsoldiers from Osnabrück in the Battle of Waterloo. The monument was built twoyears after the Battle with the donations of lawyer Gerhard von Gülich. HegerTor resembles both the Arch of Titus in Rome and the aqueduct, which was partof the castle fortifications destroyed in 1815.
The side facingthe old city is modeled on the medieval gates, while the opposite side lookslike a classic military monument. It’s worth climbing up the arch to seespectacular views of the old town. Heger Tor quarter with many shops andrestaurants is on the other side of the arch.
