Hammerstein Castle is located in the picturesquevillage of Apelern, 45 minutes’ drive from Stadthagen. Its architecturecombines the ancient Gothic style and the Weser Renaissance discreet luxury.Once it was one of the first aristocratic manors in northern Germany. The firsthistorical mention of Hammerstein Castle and Apelern dates to the XI century.However, the castle got its present look and shape towards the end of thecentury XVI. It was when a landscaped park with linden alley leading to the castle’smain entrance, with a beautiful pond, blooming flowerbeds, and a maze oforchards appeared there.
HammersteinCastle was repeatedly restored. It was last reconstructed at the end of thelast century. The castle walls are decorated with portraits of eminent noblemenwho owned it over the last three centuries. In the main hall the luxuriouswooden floor with ancient floorboards was restored, while the fireplaces aredecorated with monograms and quotations from ancient philosophers. At the endof the walk you can climb the narrow spiral staircase in the castle tower toenjoy the idyllic landscapes surrounding Hammerstein from a height.
