Gymnasium Illustre Arnoldinum (also known as Hohe Schule and High School) was founded in Steinfurt in 1588 by Count Arnold II to counter the anti-Protestant propaganda of the Jesuits from Munster. The Academy of Strasbourg, where Arnold studied theology and law, was taken as an example. The first school building was built in the Renaissance style in 1591-1593. It is remarkable that the two towers of different shapes and heights are topped with weather vanes depicting the coats of arms of Arnold and his wife. At the top of the square tower is a platform for astronomical observations, surrounded by a wrought iron fence.
After Napoleon's administration closed the school in 1811, the building was empty for a long time. In 1867 the district court was established there and then it housed the library. Now a music school and an adult education center are there. The history Gymnasium Arnoldinum did not end there. In 1853, it was revived both as a public educational institution, but not in the old building. Currently, the gymnasium is located in the north of Burgsteinfurt.
