The massive stone towers of themedieval Gutenfels Castle on the steep 110-m hill tower over the town of Kaub.This citadel and the colorful Pfalzgrafenstein Castle were built in the XIIIcentury as a customs post of the Holy Roman Empire. However, in contrast to theship-castle, Gutenfels castle was repeatedly captured and destroyed.
In 1806,Napoleon ordered to destroy the castle. However, the citadel was saved thanksto the efforts of local archivist, buying out Gutenfels. Today, the castle witha 35-meter tower-dungeon houses a luxury hotel. It also has a viewing platform.
