The Great Church (Große Kirche) is the main church of the Evangelical community in Burgsteinfurt. It is located outside the old town. The temple got its name only in 1380, after the second church was built in the city, which is accordingly called the Minor Church (Kleine Kirche).
The first Protestant worship in the Great Church was held on January 25, 1564: this day is considered the Reformation Day in Steinfurt. According to legend, the wife of Arnold II, Countess Magdalene, rushed to the temple on a white horse while her husband was asleep, ousted the confused Catholic priests and announced it a Protestant church.
