The family nest ofthe House of Glücksburg in the same-name city, 11 km from Flensburg, literally grewfrom a monastery. There was a Cistercian monastery at the place of Glücksburg Castlebefore the Reformation. Granite blocks of the monastery were used for theconstruction of the castle foundation at the end of the XVI century. Now thecastle is surrounded by water, which was not there at the time of theconstruction and is an artificial lake. Duke Hans, the younger brother of theDanish king was the first owner of the castle. Later, five generations of thisfamily owned it.
