The ruins of the ancient Furstenberg Castle are notfar from the town of Hüfingen in Baden. Once it was a very big castle, standingon a hill towering above the neighborhood. It was first mentioned in chroniclesin 1175 and was owned by the House if Zähringen. This dynasty’s last member wasDuke Berthold V von Zähringen. Then the castle was owned by the Counts of Urach, who became Furstenberg due to the new ownership.
The ThirtyYears' War (1618-1648) put an end to the welfare of the castle owners. Thewarring parties did not spare the ancient castle. It was destroyed during thehostilities and could not be restored any more. However, the ruins of theancient buildings on the hill are so picturesque that still attract artists, lovers of old castles and just romantic travelers from all over Europe.
