Flottmann-Hallen is housed in a former plantbuilding in Herne. At the beginning of the XX century, Herne became famous thanksto the invention of the rock-drill unit by a local businessman, HenryFlottmann. In 1908, Flottmann built a factory and started advancedmanufacturing. Shifts at his plants were shorter than in other enterprises. Hisworkers worked in spacious halls, which became a game changer in the industrialdesign. The fact that Flottmann brought the factory gate from the World Exhibitionin Paris comes to prove the owner's attention to detail. The Art Nouveau wroughtiron gate is a real work of art.
In the 1940s, the factory fellto decay. They were going to pull down the building, but then changed theirminds and in 1986 opened a cultural center in it. Now Flottmann-Hallen houses exhibitionsof contemporary artists. Besides, here you can enjoy dance and theaterperformances, variety shows, stand-up shows, concerts ranging from avant-gardemusic to Dixieland.
